Hi, my name is David Joseph Chiappetta and I was born on July 27, 2007. I was born with something called holoprosencephaly and it means that my brain was not divided and I don't really have much of a brain. I do have a brain stem which controls my heart and lungs so that's good. My hypothalamus doesn't work either though so I can get either really hot or really cold very easily and quickly. Mom and Dad have to be my thermometer for me though which keeps them pretty busy at times. I also have a feeding tube in my stomach so I can eat since I can't swallow and I have a trache so I can breathe since I only have one nostril and it's blocked. Mom and dad have to suction me out too since I get mucuous buildup and have acid reflux. Sometimes I can keep them busy with that too. I also have Diabetes Insipidus which is a water issue and so I have to be given a certain amount of water with my medicines. If my sodium level is too high then that will cause me to have more seizures as well as if my temperature gets too high. I already have a seizure condition because of my lack of brain so some things can make it more complicated like high temperature and high sodium. See, my normal temperature range is 94 degrees to 97 degrees. Anything above that can cause me to have more seizures. See, I told you I keep my parents busy. :-) The doctors said though that I may not make it to birth and if I did I would only live a month or so. They also said that I will not be able to talk or walk or crawl or any of those normal baby things. Well, I'm here to tell you that I am4 years old now and I am learning to pick my head up when on my tummy! I'm also learning to put some weight on my legs and I laugh and smile. Cool huh? I just wanted to add that although you see mom and dad in the description above...it has just been mommy and me for a while now since daddy passed away in January of 2010.

What a Day!!!

Hey Everybody! Boy did mommy and grandma and me have an exciting day on Thursday! It all started off by me not sleeping for Grandma at all on Wednesday night...I know...I'm a bad boy. :-) Well, Thursday morning grandma had to go get some groceries so her and mommy and I went to the grocery store. Grandma likes to use those motorized carts because it's easier for her to get through the store because of her bad knees and hip. Anyways....we were cruisin through the store with grandma driving her motor cart and mommy was pushing me in my car seat in the regular cart. Well, I don't know what grandma was thinking but she about ran a man over coming to the end of one of the aisles. She forgot how to stop and almost ran over him but she stopped in time and was letting him pass but then pushed the button and started going forward again and about hit the man again!!! Oh we had a good laugh. It was funny. Then we came home and my uncles dog Ebony was on grandma's front porch and the back door to his house was wide open. Don't know if someone was trying to break in or not. Then since it was such a nice day outside grandma and mommy took me for a golf cart ride like usual since I like them very much. Grandma had to get water for the chickens at the pump house so we had to use the golf cart anyways to hall the water. I was in my car seat like usual riding on the seat next to grandma. We stopped at the pump house so mommy and grandma could get the water and were messing with the hose. Well...to make a long story short...the golf cart was kind of on a hill too so we were a little bit tilted but I was sitting in my seat just fine. Well, next thing you know...grandma heard a THUD and called for mommy and when mommy turned around...the car seat was on the floor of the golf cart and she couldn't see me at first. That was because I had somehow managed to roll out of my car seat and onto the ground! Yeah it was a scary time for all of us but it's one of those things that will stick with mommy for the rest of her life. I am ok but I have a good bruise under my eye. Yes...I have a black eye! These are pictures of my black eye but let me tell ya the pictures don't do it justice. Well, I just thought I'd share the exciting day that we had. Today mommy has me on the floor on some blankets because I almost fell off the couch this morning on my wedge. I'm telling you people that I'm on the move now. Mommy figured that the floor was the safest place for me right now.

April 8, 2008

Hello...mommy and daddy have had their hands full with me...ok I guess I can throw grandma in there too. :-) I had an ear infection a few weeks back which was not fun so I had to be put on an antibiotic for that and it seems to have cleared up now. I hope it stays away. On top of the ear infection and getting over that...I am now starting the joys of teething. Yes...teething...and it can take longer for mine to come in especially since I really don't get anything by mouth but I do chew on my pacifier which helps some. I have been fussy fussy fussy though 'cause my toofies hurt coming in. I feel sorry for mommy and daddy and grandma. :-) I didn't do well with sleeeping either because of my ear infection and teething. Although...one of mommies friends suggested some homeopathic Hylands teething tablets and they have been a life saver. They work really well and help me out a lot. Mommy had to try something. :-) So who knows how long the teething journey will last but eventually...this too shall pass as mommy says. There has been so much going on. This easter weekend I will be visited by some people from Indianapolis IN. Yeah...they are coming all that way to see me. See...there was another little boy like me in IN and mommy became friends with his parents before I was even born by emailing and talking on the internet. Well, this little boy Sammy died just short of his 5th birthday! To make a long story short they are graciously passing along his wheelchair to us. We are totally humbled at this big kind gesture. They have always wanted to meet me so they are coming this weekend. April 10 was also Sammy's birthday so they wanted to celebrate it this year by bringing me his wheelchair...what a noble thing to do. How can you ever repay someone for something like that? I am excited to meet them and I'm sure it will be a great weekend. God truly puts people in your life for different reasons and I'm glad mommy met them and that we will get to meet them in person. God is awesome! I also have the appointment at Johns Hopkins with the reconstructionist on April 14th which will be a lot to pray about. Well, I better let mommy go so she can upload some pictures and videos of me so enjoy and Happy Easter to everyone!

Getting hard to contain me, the little monkey now. I will be laying longways on the couch and then all of a sudden you'll turn around and I'm in the crack laying the other way!

so cute in my sailboat outfit.

This is a little video of me learning to use my switch toys.

This video shows you how I like to "move"

This video almost made mommy cry. For someone who was not supposed to do much of anything...I"m proving them wrong. :-) This is the best and most I've held my head up. Mommy was so blessed when she saw me doing it. Thank you God for how far you have allowed me to come and all the things I can do.

March 24, 2009

Hey Everybody...sorry mommy hasn't been on here and updating in a while but sometimes just get so busy around here and mommy is tired. I have been fighting an ear infection and so I haven't been sleeping too well. Mostly not at all at nights. On top of everything else I am starting to get a little tooth and again...that doesn't make it very fun around here. :-) And when I don't feel good it causes me to have more seizures and things like that as well which sometimes interrupts my sleep! We are all doing good though and hanging in there and God's strength is getting us through. That and mommy has been drinking A LOT of coffee. :-) I have been doing really well though on my baby food that mommy has been giving me. I get to have pears and carrots and green beans and oatmeal and one can of formula now and I am definitely growing. Maybe even growing too big too fast so when we go back to see Dr. Levey at Kennedy Krieger we might have to do some adjustments. :-) I haven't had alot of gas with the baby food either and I am much more content! We have an appointment with my pediatrician tomorrow Wednesday the 25th to see if my ear infection has cleared up. Then on April 14th we go to Johns Hopkins to see again about reconstruction on my nose to open it up and maybe the possibility of not having my trache. We'll see what happens. It is certainly something to be in prayer about because this is big! Well...I think that just about brings you up to date so I will let mommy get off here and we'll keep taking pictures and posting some. :-) Love you all.

Mr. Rambo? :-)

The vision therapists were here yesterday evening and so they are working with me and using some switches to learn how to activate toys and things. They had one that was above my head and all I had to do was turn my head and touch it and it would activate a toy. I was doing really well with it and then they decided to try another type of switch. This was one that I had to wear a headband so he could stick in there and it would hold. It was supposed to work so that if I just moved slightly it would activate the toy but it was not working so well and I was not a very happy camper as you can tell. :-)

Cute

Isn't he getting big? Mr. Comfy!
This was a cute shirt mommy got at goodwill for only 2 dollars! It really does fit me with the attitude and all as well as if you know me...the little dude on the shirt looks like me when I get mad. Same expressions. :-)

March 1, 2009

Wow...it's hard to believe that this is March already. Time has gone by quickly. Before you know it I'll be 2 years old. :-) Well...I have been doing pretty good. As always I have been keeping daddy and mommy very busy. I have been still very very very gassy and uncomfortable lately but mommy and grandma started giving me some baby food through my tube about 1 week ago and I've been doing pretty well on it. I am down to one can of formula throughout the day and then now I also get some baby prunes and carrots and pears and oatmeal. I feel more like a normal baby with having some food. And my skin used to be really really dry but since I've been on some baby food my skin is not nearly as dry. My new formula has Fiber in it and so my poopies were more formed and a little bit harder. It's funny because just yesterday I let a good log go and mommy was changing my diaper and dropped the turd right on the couch. But guess what though...it didn't make a mark at all. :-) And then of course I had to give mommy and daddy another good laugh last night after my bath because I was doing a lot of farting in the tub and as soon as mommy took me out and put me on the towel to start drying me off...yeah...I pooped right on the towel. So daddy had to run get another towel. It's so much fun around here sometimes and I'm sure you just love hearing my poop stories but sometimes they make for some good fun. :-) Since mommy has been giving me pears though now instead of apples...my poopies are getting softer now. Ok well I'll let mommy go now so she can get ready and feed me again soon so I'll catch you all later. Hope everyone is good.

My new bath chair

I also got my new bath chair yesterday too. It is bit but again I will grow into it. It was very comfortable though. Mommy has it on the lowest setting. It also tilts up so that I would be sitting up like in a chair but for now this works the best. Mommy and daddy I'm afraid are going to have to take off their shower doors because it's getting a little harder for mommy to bathe me especially with my chair being so big. And who knows where mommy and daddy are going to store it because their bathroom is very very small and they need to take a bath and shower too. Oh well...I guess we'll figure out something. I just thought you all might enjoy seeing the pictures of my new bath chair and stander.

My Stander

I just got my new stander yesterday to help me learn how to stand up better and put some good weight through my legs and feet. Am I starting to look more like a big boy now? As you can see in the pictures I certainly have a lot of room to grow into this contraption. :-) Yesterday my therapist spent time setting it all up and mommy and her had me in and out of it getting the adjustments right for my height. And finally...success. They put me in it and left me there for about 10 minutes and I did good. We have to start out by me just being in it for like 10 minutes at a time working up to about a half hour. Because I'm now standing and in an upright postition it makes my heart work harder so we don't want to overdue it. It's also good for strengthening my heart muscles and all. You probably can't tell from the picture but it is tilted back a bit. It will raise straight up but again I have to work towards that because we don't want to overwork my heart. I think this is a neat little contraption. :-)

Bye Bye to my Green and Blue Dinasaur Suit :-(

Hi Everybody. Guess what...mommy had to throw away my green and blue striped dinosaur suit. It was a very very favorite outfit! I would have to say one of my favorites and it's gone now. :-( See...here's what happened. I have been having lots and lots of gas still and so I was doing my passing gas thing and mommy changed my wet diaper. After I got a nice clean diaper I pooped some. Then after mommy changed that diaper I was doing some more passing gas and mommy had to pick me up for that one to help me get it out and boy was it explosive! I passed my gas and then I pooped some more...only this time it was bad. Mommy knew I had pooped so she layed me back down to change my diaper and what to her wondering eyes appeared but a whole cute suit filled with poop! :-) Yes...I had pooped all up the back of me and it was all squishing out my diaper up the back and my suit was nasty. It was really too much to be able to clean and wash so mommy had to throw it out. I guess mommy is just going to have to find me another one but she doesn't remember where this one came from. She's thinking it's Walmart but does anyone who have little ones know where this one might have come from? Is it Walmart? Please...I really really need a new one. I'm very sad I had to part with it! It was such a fun day for mommy yesterday because after I had done all that of course she had to do my laundry and change the comforter and stuff on the couch from previous spit ups and she went to change my suit after that and started putting one on me and I guess it somehow got folded back up and put in the drawer dirty because it has slobbers and stuff all down the front of it and smelled pretty bad so she had to take that one off and put on another outfit. I was keeping mommy busy yesterday but we had fun. :-) Catch everyone later.
